GLP-1 weight loss medications (such as Wegovy or Mounjaro) make it easier to eat less. We’ll explain what happens when you stop treatment, what clinical studies have found, and how to put a plan in place to protect your progress.

What happens when you stop taking GLP-1 medication?

GLP-1 medications help while you’re taking them. When you stop, their effect on appetite and fullness gradually reduces in the following weeks. As hunger returns, appetite increases and weight can begin to rise again over time. This isn’t a failure – it’s a normal biological response as your hormones return to their original levels.

What studies have found

Across studies, weight regain after stopping GLP-1 treatment is common:

  • In studies where some people continued treatment and others stopped, the people who stopped were more likely to regain weight, while those who continued tended to maintain more of their progress
  • Research that combines results from multiple studies shows that people regain a meaningful amount of weight after stopping GLP-1 medicines, and the regain is broadly proportional to the weight lost while on treatment.
  • The newest evidence suggests regain can steadily occur month to month after stopping, at around 0.8 kg per month. Improvements in health measures like blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol can gradually move back toward pre-treatment levels after stopping.

If you’re thinking about stopping

If you’re considering stopping, it’s worth discussing it with your doctor. A plan can help you feel more in control:

  • Agree on the reason and timing
Examples include pregnancy planning, side effects, supply issues, a procedure, or having reached a personal milestone.
  • Put a maintenance plan in place.
A realistic and flexible food and exercise plan, sleep, stress support, and regular check-ins can all help protect progress.
  • Discuss options
Your doctor can talk through what ongoing support might look like, based on your goals and how you’re finding treatment.

Are GLP-1 medications safe for long-term use?

Current evidence is reassuring, with clinical trials supporting ongoing use over at least two years for Wegovy, alongside lifestyle support. WHO guidance also frames GLP-1 medicines as long-term treatments for obesity in appropriate adults, alongside behavioural support and monitoring.

Key messages

  • GLP-1 medicines help with weight loss while you’re taking them, but their appetite effects fade after you stop
  • Weight regain is common after stopping, and it’s a normal biological response.
  • People who continue treatment typically maintain more weight loss than those who stop.
  • Planning can help protect improvements in weight and health markers.

What our clinical experts say

At Genwell, stopping GLP-1 treatment is never an unsupported decision. We know that weight regain after stopping is common and reflects normal biology. Appetite tends to return, and insulin sensitivity can decline. That’s why we plad. For some individuals, continuing a low-maintenance dose alongside lifestyle strategies is appropriate. For others, a structured pause with ongoing support may be the right choice. There is no one timeline for everyone, but an informed decision made together with your Genwell team will support sustainable outcomes.

Genwell reflections

Weight regain after stopping GLP-1 treatment is likely, and it does not mean you have done something wrong. Evidence suggests that, without a plan, weight and health markers often drift back towards baseline over time.

At Genwell, the focus isn’t just prescribing medication, it’s long-term success: building sustainable habits, supporting your relationship with food, and strengthening metabolic and emotional health.

Our goal is to equip you with the confidence and skills to maintain progress in an achievable and sustainable way and feel healthier and more in control.
