A new option for weight management has arrived

If you’ve been thinking about Mounjaro or Wegovy, but the idea of a weekly injection has deterred you, great news has been announced this week.

On 11 June 2026, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved Wegovy (semaglutide) as the first GLP-1 oral tablet for weight management in the UK. It uses the same active ingredient as the weekly injections that have helped millions of people worldwide lose weight and improve their metabolic health.

At Genwell, we believe that successful weight management isn’t one size fits all, so we’re excited to be able to offer a further option to create a personalised plan that fits your health goals, lifestyle and medical history.

Read on to find out how oral Wegovy works, who it may be suitable for, how it compares with injectable treatments, and more.

Oral Wegovy: headline facts

  • Active ingredient: Semaglutide
  • Medication class: GLP-1 receptor agonist
  • Manufacturer: Novo Nordisk
  • MHRA approval: 11 June 2026
  • UK availability: expected summer 2026

Who is it licensed for?

  • Adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m² or above
  • Adults with a BMI between 27 and 30 kg/m² who have at least one weight-related health condition

At Genwell, we are able to extend our support further to adults with a BMI of 25 or above who have weight-related health conditions, or who have been unable to achieve meaningful weight loss through other approaches.

Average weight loss?

13.6% of starting body weight after 64 weeks.

How is it taken?

One tablet every morning on an empty stomach, with a small amount of water, followed by no food or drink for at least 30 minutes.

Cost

Final UK pricing has not yet been confirmed, although Wegovy tablets may offer savings compared with injectable treatments.

What is oral Wegovy and how does it work?

Oral Wegovy contains semaglutide, exactly the same active ingredient found in injectable Wegovy.

Semaglutide belongs to a group of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines mimic a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is released from the gut after eating.

GLP-1 plays an important role in regulating:

  • Hunger
  • Fullness and satiety
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Food cravings
  • Gastric emptying

By enhancing these natural signals, semaglutide helps you feel fuller for longer, reduces appetite, and often decreases what many patients describe as “food noise” — the constant thoughts about food, eating and snacking that can make weight loss difficult.

Semaglutide works with the body’s own biological systems involved in energy balance and appetite regulation, and many people find they naturally eat smaller portions, feel satisfied sooner and have less desire to snack between meals.

Want more detail?

Oral semaglutide is a peptide molecule that would normally be broken down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes before it can be absorbed. This is why most GLP-1 medications have historically been given by injection.

Oral Wegovy is coated in a special absorption enhancer called SNAC (salcaprozate sodium). This helps protect the semaglutide as it passes through the stomach and allows a small amount to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Even with this clever coating, only a tiny proportion of the medication is absorbed. This is one reason why the tablet dose appears much higher than the injectable dose.

The strict instructions around fasting and timing are important because food and drink can dilute the protective SNAC layer, significantly reducing absorption and making your Wegovy treatment less effective.

Why might you choose oral Wegovy?

Whilst injectable Wegovy and Mounjaro will remain excellent options for many people, oral Wegovy may suit you and your lifestyle better.

If you dislike injections

The most obvious reason is if you simply don’t like needles.

Although most people find the pens simple to use, you might just not feel comfortable with self-injecting. A daily tablet may feel more familiar and comfortable.

If you’re considering longer-term maintenance

If you have successfully lost weight with injectable treatments, you may feel nervous about both continuing indefinitely and stopping altogether. Oral Wegovy provides another option when you’re looking to maintain your results over the longer term.

If you want a gentler level of support

Not everyone needs or wants the most powerful weight loss medication available. If you have more modest weight loss goals, or if your goal is focused more on improving your metabolic health, oral Wegovy may provide enough support to help you see significant improvements.

Ultimately, the best treatment depends on your medical history, health goals, lifestyle and personal preferences. At Genwell, treatment recommendations are always individualised rather than based on a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you have experienced injection-site reactions

Although uncommon, some patients experience redness, itching or irritation around injection sites. A tablet formulation avoids this issue altogether.

If you want a simpler and more sustainable option

Oral Wegovy doesn’t require injection pens, needles or sharps bins. It may also be easier to travel with and generates less plastic waste than injectable treatments.

What are the benefits of oral Wegovy?

Weight loss

Like injectable Wegovy, oral Wegovy works by helping you feel fuller sooner, reducing hunger and decreasing food noise.

For many people, this makes it easier to eat smaller portions, reduce snacking and make more conscious food choices without feeling constantly deprived.

In turn this can lead to significant weight loss, even when other methods haven’t been successful.

Weight maintenance

Achieving a healthy weight is only half the battle — keeping it off is just as hard.

Although lifestyle behaviour changes can make a big difference, many of the factors that contribute to weight gain remain after you lose weight.

GLP-1 medications like Wegovy tablets can help counteract some of these drivers and help you maintain the progress you have worked so hard to achieve.

Improving health

Weight loss is only part of the story.

Most people using GLP-1 medications see improvements in blood sugar control, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, fatty liver disease and other markers of metabolic health.

You might consider Wegovy tablets as part of a wider health improvement strategy rather than simply a way of reducing the number on the scales.

Dosing and titration

As with injectable Wegovy, treatment is started gradually to help minimise side effects.

The starting dose is 1.5 mg daily, and can be increased to 4 mg, 9 mg and then 25 mg daily after a minimum of 4 weeks at each dose.

Just as with the injectable versions, not everyone needs the maximum dose. At Genwell, we make dosing decisions together with you, based on factors such as weight loss progress and goals, appetite control, side effects and your individual preferences.

Pricing

Final UK pricing for Wegovy tablets has not yet been announced. However, as cold storage is not expected to be required, we anticipate there may be marginal savings compared with injectable GLP-1 treatments.

We’ll share clear pricing details as soon as they are confirmed, so you can compare the available options before making a decision.

How to take oral Wegovy

Taking the tablet correctly is essential to ensure it works effectively.

The tablet should be taken:

  • First thing in the morning
  • On an empty stomach after fasting for at least 8 hours
  • At least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other medications
  • With a small amount of water (no more than 120 ml)
  • Swallowed whole

It’s important to stick to these instructions strictly to ensure your tablets work properly.

How effective is oral Wegovy?

Wegovy tablets can help you achieve clinically meaningful weight loss that can significantly improve your health.

In trials, adults who combined oral semaglutide with lifestyle changes achieved an average weight loss of 13.6% after 64 weeks, with nearly a third of patients losing more than 20% of their starting body weight.

Oral Wegovy vs injectable Wegovy vs Mounjaro

Here’s how the three treatments compare:

Weight medication comparison

It’s important to remember that choosing the “best” medication isn’t simply about achieving the greatest weight loss.

Convenience, side effects, lifestyle fit, medical history and personal preference all play an important role in determining which treatment is right for you.

What about Rybelsus and Foundayo tablets?

Rybelsus

You may have heard of Rybelsus and wondered whether it’s the same thing.

Both Rybelsus and Wegovy contain semaglutide and both are tablets.

However, Rybelsus is only licensed in the UK for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, not weight management.

Foundayo

Another oral weight loss tablet, Foundayo (orforglipron), is currently approved for weight management in the US. Developed by Eli Lilly, it is also an oral GLP-1 medication.

Unlike Wegovy, Foundayo can survive the digestive system without requiring a protective coating.

This means it does not need to be taken on an empty stomach and can be taken at any time of day, making it considerably more flexible.

It has been associated with around 11% weight loss at 72 weeks, and people who switched from injectable Wegovy to Foundayo were better able to maintain their weight loss than people who switched to placebo.

At the time of writing, Foundayo has not yet been approved for weight management in the UK, but this is anticipated by the end of 2026.

Can you switch between tablets and injections?

Yes.

For some patients, switching between formulations may be appropriate.

The MHRA approval documentation states that people already taking injectable Wegovy 2.4 mg weekly can transition directly to oral Wegovy 25 mg daily. It is also possible to switch from the tablet form to another GLP-1 injection.

Any switching process should be supervised by a healthcare professional to ensure appropriate dosing and minimise side effects.

Side effects of oral Wegovy

Like all GLP-1 medications, oral Wegovy can cause side effects, with 74% of people taking it reporting side effects.

The most common side effects were similar to those experienced with injectable Wegovy:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Indigestion

Most side effects were mild to moderate and occurred when treatment was started or during dose increases.

Many people find that symptoms improve as their body adapts to treatment, and rates of gastrointestinal side effects reported with oral Wegovy appear broadly similar to those seen with injectable GLP-1 treatments.

Serious side effects

Serious side effects are uncommon but can include:

  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation
  • Severe dehydration
  • Significant gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Allergic reactions

Hypoglycaemia is generally uncommon when oral Wegovy is used alone but may occur when combined with certain diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas.

Anyone experiencing severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or symptoms of an allergic reaction should seek urgent medical attention.

Who should not take oral Wegovy?

Oral Wegovy is not suitable for everyone.

You should not take oral Wegovy if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma
  • Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)
  • Are pregnant or planning pregnancy
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Have a known allergy to semaglutide or any ingredient in the tablet

Extra caution may be required in people with a history of pancreatitis or significant gastrointestinal disorders.

A full medical assessment should always be undertaken before starting treatment.

Is oral Wegovy available yet?

Not quite.

Although oral Wegovy received MHRA approval on 11 June 2026, supplies are not yet available in the UK.

Stock is expected to arrive during summer 2026.

Like injectable Wegovy and Mounjaro, oral Wegovy will remain a prescription-only medicine and should only be used under appropriate medical supervision.

Final thoughts

The approval of oral Wegovy is an exciting step forward in obesity treatment and weight management in the UK.

For people who dislike injections, want a more convenient option or are looking for an alternative way to access the benefits of semaglutide, it may provide an attractive new choice.

As with all weight management medications, the best results occur when treatment is combined with personalised support around nutrition, physical activity, behaviour change and long-term health habits.

At Genwell, every patient is supported by a named doctor and a wider clinical team to help ensure treatment is safe, effective and tailored to their individual needs.
